In its third year, the Global Cup – Greece had record participation in the host city of Loutrki. Thirteen total teams took to the courts in two different venues over four days of intense competition. With 10 teams in the Men’s 45+ and three teams in the Men’s 60+ there was plenty of volleyball to go around.
After pool play and then a double elimination tournament, the finals came down to the best four teams. USA took on Israel in the Bronze medal match, putting up a good fight but the Israelis were too strong, sweeping into the bronze without dropping a set. The gold medal match between Italy and Norway went all three sets with Italy coming out on top after a great performance throughout the tournament.
For the men’s 60+ division, the results were a little more cut and dried. The Russians came out on top, without loosing a match the entire tournament. Germany and Sweden rounded out the top finishers with a silver and bronze respectively.
The Global Cup tour continues in October with women’s 50+ playing in St. George, Utah, USA.
